I had the misfortune of taking my wheelchair-bound mother to the store on the Leicester Road, Rugby, at around 7 p.m. on Friday the 28th July and I was horrified at just how difficult it was to navigate the store. Virtually every aisle had cages either containing rubbish or produce waiting to be put out on display but there were no staff actually doing anything with them. It is no word of a lie - it felt as though I was wheeling her around the Tesco stock room!
Due to the design of the wheelchair trollies and my mum’s wheelchair, it is impossible to go backwards as when the front wheels turn on their pivots, the jam against the wheel on the trolly. The only way to fix this is to disconnect the trolly from the chair, turn around, and then reconnect. This has to be done quite regularly when there’s in sufficient room in the aisle to turn around because the staff are storing stock there.
I would hate to think what would happen in the event of an emergency evacuation of the store - it surely cannot be safe.
Unfortunately this is not the first time that we’ve witnessed the store in such a state: it was like that on the previous Friday evening. It is clear that stock has to be put out on display, but why does it all have to come out at once and why are the cages that are full of rubbish not removed?
I emailed their customer services team on the 28th July but didn’t get an acknowledgement, let alone a reply.
